Whats it like in a backpacker hostel?

Im a 23 year old Australian male going to New York and LA in feb, but have never stayed in a backpacker hostel. I always stay in normal accomadation with other people but am going to be staying in a hostel on my own and was wondering what its going to be like. Are they fun or just a way of saving money on accomadation? I would like to hear your stories. Thanks!

It's been a few years since I stayed in a backpackers, but you should find it an enjoyable experience. Be aware that all backpacker accommodation is not equal even when it is a similar price, so do a little research beforehand if possible and ask other travellers for recommendations as you go. Some backpacker hostels are pure gross but i have stayed in a few in Australia and most have been pretty good so far.

If you live in Sydney you should check out the Wakeup hostel which is next to Central traing station. I stayed there as it was part of my Ultimate Oz package deal but it was one of the best hostels i have stayed in so far. Nice & clean etc.

My only advice is to really be careful with your stuff in hostels as i know of a few people who have had things stolen. Also food in hostel kitchens often goes missing. i guess that just the backpacker life though.
