Hey guys,
I am planning to go travelling in australia in july for a year and am starting to get excited and planning a bit now.
Does anyone have some tips on what to do before i get there and how to make it as easy (and safe) as possible when i arrive?
Thanks
Ellie

Re: Tips for the best start in AUstralia
Hi Ellie,
Wow I remember how excited I felt planning my trip to australia & I thought for sure nothing would beat that exhilarating adrenalin rush just before I left Heathrow. But i think austraila is so much better than even what you hope for before you leave the uk. Its great, the people are so lovely & friendly and helpful, everywhere you go you meet plenty of new people (aussies & travellers), and the scenery is just amazing.
I have plenty of travel tips but in the beginning you just need to figure out where you want to get started from, most people fly into sydney and make sure that you have enough money to keep you going for a while. ive met a few people who spent all their savings in thailand/cambodia or fiji on their way to australia & were skint within their first few weeks here. Not fun.
If you are coming travelling with a friend or you already know people out here, then try and stay with them for a while. If you don't then i wholehaertedly recommend doing what I did & get yourself one of those starter packages that organise everything for you before you get here. I went with the guys at Ultimate Oz & it was absolutrly brilliant. They organise your bank account, a tax file number & book your first few nights accommodation & best of all, in my books, they take you out on the town & get you meeting people. within the first 5 days in australia i had met so many new people & did a surfing trip, went to the blue mountains, visited bondi beach, saw the opera house & harbour bridge.
once you get here it's all good... you will have the best time. Good luck & let me know if you need any more info.

Hi Poppie,
Thanks so much for your kind and very detailed reply. That is fantastic. I am getting VERY excited about my trip now and reading your message made me even more so.
I have read other posts on this forum and other places about the Ultimate Oz starter package, so I jusyt think I will go with that one. Sounds like fun and it gives me peace of mind. Plus, I can just book everything now & not worry about a thing, except getting enough spending money together for when I arrive. I can't wait.
Thanks again & hope you have fun too.

Hey guys,
My top tips are:
1. Save as much cash as you can
2. Only bring what you absolutely need
3. If from UK - Try to get out of the Brittish Backpacker crowd as fast as possible - there are so many other cool people to meet
4. Get your work through travellers at work - that site is brillitant & will keep you cashed up when you need it
5. Ask aussies in your local area where the best beaches and bush walks are

I just re-read this and thought of something else..... take out a membership with Travellers At Work so that you can get work anywhere when you are travelling around Australia.
My friend and I just did a sydney to hervey bay trip & we have gotten work in sydney, then newcastle, byron bay, ipswich and brisbane all through that company. We got our membership for free through our Ultimate Oz arrival package, but if you dont book that you can buy a taw membership direct. You would be crazy not to book the Ultimate Oz package though, much better value for money & you get so much now.

Re: Tips for the best start in AUstralia
hi - my tips to come out to australia travelling are:
* Book your trip out to australia with Ultimate Oz - especially if you are travelling on your own - they were brilliant and I had the best week starting out here. Everything was set up properly from the start and I was straight into going out at nights, sightseeing during the day etc. Was the best way to start here by far. Plus they have helped me get plenty of work.
* Keep your plans flexible - keep an open mind about where you want to go & try to stay flexible so that you can meet up with new people along the way
* Save up as much cash as you can - and if you cant, get work out here straight away (see above about Ultimate oz)
* Make sure you definitely visit The Whitsunday islands - will blow your mind
* If you can wrangle it - go to Darwin - such a cool place
Goodl luch - James,
