Details of work/ cost of living etc

Postby qwertyko26 » Wed Oct 12, 2011 8:26 pm

im actually heading out there this January. I've done my fair share of research but you got to admit it's quite confusing.

here are a couple of questions that will help me pan out everything

1. ) is tax really 29c on the dollar period for someone on a working holiday/work and holiday Visa?
2. ) what is the average MONTHLY salary AFTER tax?
3. ) average monthly housing costs? (for someone by themselves in the cheapest possible place)
4. ) i read that you can only work with 1 specific employer up to 6 months, that means you can work the ENTIRE year right? sorry its just i read this forum where the guy was saying if you stay 12 months you can only work half of that?
5. ) are you allowed to work 7 days a week? either 7 days at that 1 company, or a separate job on the weekends?

^ answers to those questions would be greatly appreciated. the thing is
i know it sounds like im just going there for the work, but actually i have a couple of loose ends that need to be tied down first which means ill have to devote my 1st year to just purely working.

i hope someone can get back to me soon, i look forward to reading your replies.

Do you know what kind of visa you are going to apply for? as that will affect some of your answers.

Here are some rough examples of living costs for one week-

Rent in Sydney, one bedroom flat- $300- 350
Food - $150
Fuel for city driving- $50
Phone and internet- $20

The average cafe worker will get about 200 dollars after tax per day.
The average day installing skylights about $250 per day after tax.
The average for retail worker about $200 after tax.

A bottle of beer at a bottle shop- $2
A bottle of beer at a pub- $6

That is a bit all over the shop, but that is from my experience, hope that helps.
